I'm off to Whitby for the day in a few weeks time there's a couple of little arcades there. Last time I was there I remember that among the ticket redemption games, the fruit machines and the ticket redemption fruit machines there was a Star Wars Battle Pod cabinet which was fun to play.

The one I see the most is Konami's Dance Dance Revolution series. Hasn't changed much since the PS1 days from what I can tell. Would never get me on one in public now though, obviously...

Went to Arcade Club in Leeds on Saturday with the kids and had a lot of fun. The sit-down OutRun cabinet they had was absolutely immense (as was the Space Harrier one). Also had a cool Luigi's Mansion game as well. And I got to play PacLand with the original button controls (the cabinets always had a joystick on the ones I played as a kid). I'd heartily recommend it.

There was meant to be a barcade type place opening in Newcastle but I think COVID kinda got in the way and there hasn't been a lot of news regarding it for a while.

kerr, I've enjoyed seeing your arcade machine vids on your Twitter channel and it looks like you've been having a cracking time! I've not seen arcade machines in recent years so most of the titles you shared where new to me.

I've not played at arcades that often but I do recall trying out Boot Hill, Space Invaders, Galaxian, Pac-Man, Pengo, Bomb Jack, Out Run and Gauntlet many years ago :-). A bit later, I had a go on a sit-in cab of Sega Rally and that was fun!

I used to play lots of arcade games in the 80's and the 90's I'd love to see older stuff like pacman, bombjack golden axe, X men etc but I guess at least there's some newer arcade games in amongst all the gamblers and teddy bear claw machines, at some point I will make a video talking about my thoughts on arcades now in general. Anyways for those who don't follow my twitter here are some more links

Boot Hill is one of if not the oldest arcade game I’ve played.

o/. It was a simple game and I mis-remembered it as being an Atari title; but I looked it up and it was Midway.

Here it is!

It was pretty clever in using a painted background with the very simple sprites placed over the top.

Midway released it but I'm pretty sure Taito made it, it's a fab game , I used to love it, I was cowboy obsessed at one point, I used to walk around The American Adventure in a white cowboy hat with toy guns strapped all over me lol.

That's a good call, kerr - it *was* developed by Taito and then licensed in the west by Midway. I remember playing it for a few goes in the arcades; very simple but it seemed so cool at the time :-).

One game that I never tried but I recall seeing was Sega's 18-Wheeler; the arcade lorry-driving action title. It looked to be fun and, being an Xbox player at the time, I was frustrated that it only released on PS2 and GameCube!

The oldest one I've played is the Namco skeet shooting one that had full size shotguns, I was around 8 at the time and could barely lift the thing, let alone shoot accurately.

Just looked that up, it was called Shoot Away. I've seen the machine in arcades before but never played it.

There seems to be an awful lot of licensed rail shooters and others with massive hydraulic cabinets in the arcades these days, I guess that's just down to the fact that games consoles are so powerful and commonplace in homes that arcade machines have to offer a different kind of experience to gaming at home.

Yep it's all lightgun games and racing games all with guns and a lot with hydrolics and I bet it's exactly what you said, consoles are so powerful now days you can't really beat there graphics in the arcade so they have to offer something else you can't get in the home environment easily...... There were also a lot of big VR machines but I didn't bother with them mostly as people were letting there babies suck on the foam around the eye pieces and there kids sneeze on them and you never ever saw any of it get cleaned....annoyingly parents were also letting there kids climb on arcade machines they weren't using and letting them try to rip the guns and guitars and stuff of them.

I guess catching up with and eventually overtaking arcade hardware spelled the end of the traditional arcade forcing companies to offer more hands on games. It would be cool to see the odd fighting game too I guess like Tekken or DOA.
