FREEDOM has officially been delayed until the 19th July.

Fake edit: Boris is all over the strawberry floating shop in this press conference. Difficult to understand what he’s going on about as he’s taking so long to get his words out. It’s like he has Alzheimer’s every mid sentence. Reverted to the press release.

19 July is the aim to have two-thirds of the adult population vaccinated with both jabs (over 50, all the vulnerable, frontline health and care workers, and over 40s who received their first dose by mid-May).

The target to give every adult their first jab is now 19 July.

23 to 24-year-olds will be invited to book jabs from tomorrow, 15th July.

I saw the symptoms for the India variant are said to be a runny nose and a headache. How the strawberry float are you supposed to tell it apart from hayfever

That's very good news. Although actually 8 in 100 needing hospital treatment of they catch covid after having the AZ jab seems quite bad.

Have I got that right?

Does it mean 92% of all covid cases or 92% of those cases that would have originally resulted in hospitalisation?

I don't know. I'm confused by it.

Surely without the jab 8 in 100 don't go into hospital?

It has to be the later, pretty certain hospitalisation without the vaccine wasn't as high as 8%.

It's good news that the vaccines are so effective anyways, i am interested to know what the effectiveness is with just 1 dose though.

That's the project with the delay, but no tightening.
Bear in mind it's caveated to hell, with lots of uncertainties.

Aren't those numbers based on a vaccine escape scenario?

Single dose more effective against hospitalisations caused by the Delta variant than expected too by the looks of things,

It's odd, if you accept that there needs to be a delay, it goes without saying that Boris Johnson is almost solely responsible for that. The public largely did their part adhering to social distancing, lockdown and all the rules. The government utterly failed on their side of the bargain by failing to prevent new variants from gaining a foothold. Labour should not be supporting any more legislation from the Tories given the sheer number of errors. That doesn't mean they should vote against, however they should at least abstain from supporting further measures (which will ensure the measures get through anyway, which is what they want).

There is literally never any comeback on the government for the myriad of mistakes which are causing unbelievable intrusion into the lives of the public. Government strawberry float up, the people suffer.

Not in the way ‘escape’ might make it sound - it’s based on PHE figures

Our government are making weak ass immigration blocks on UK people coming here, saying they have to stay at an accommodation for 10 days, but no enforcement, FFS! :x

Anyone really wanting to fly to the Republic of Ireland from GB would just fly into Northern Ireland, rent a car at the airport and bypass any forced hotel stays or unenforceable self isolation at home for 5 (or now 10) days. You also don't need to take COVID-19 tests (probably around £150) or complete a passenger locator form before boarding domestic flights within the UK.

Which seems to already be happening as the London flights to Belfast are apparently quite busy in comparison to London to Dublin (probably one of the busiest flight paths in Europe pre-pandemic) whilst smaller airports like Shannon might as well shut down for how few flights they are doing.

Finally.

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan said the Government is set to impose tighter travel restrictions on travel with the UK until 19 July due to concerns over the Delta variant, which will see the self-isolation period increased from five days to ten.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, he said that two negative PCR tests will be required to ensure people are free of infection.

He said that after 19 July travel restrictions will ease for all international travel, add that "every expectation is that the path we are set on is the one we will follow".

Not much we can do about that though, are you suggesting we shouldn't have any restrictions because the north doesn't?

We can only hope Northern Ireland introduces similar sanctions.

A united Ireland would sort this all out. :shifty:

I agree that there is much that can be done in a 'whack-a-mole' approach to blocking flights from countries with emerging variants, but until a vaccine-beating variant shows up, we have to vaccinate our way out of this. To see people like that former Apprentice contestant on GMB last week say she won't ever take the vaccine, but doesn't agree that businesses should refuse her services on account of that, was insane. We have to keep increasing the incentive to taking it or else we hit a total vaccinated figure that still leaves everything vulnerable to a variant the vaccine can beat.
