There seem to be three types of people that overuse the word "overrated".

1. People who genuinely have no idea that just because they personally don't like something, doesn't mean something is overrated.

2. People who genuinely believe that their personal taste is the only correct way of judging something. They actually believe that something enjoyed by millions/billions is overrated, just because they are arrogant enough to think that their personal taste is the only way something can be judged.

3. Trolls who will name a beloved thing just to annoy people.

Bribery.

I see what you are getting at, but unless there are a significant number of people that think Driv3r is fantastic, then it's not even close to the same thing.

The Elden Ring fanbase is kinda terrible. Any criticism is met with GIT GUD or some gooseberry fool insult on player competence.

For me it has to be much more than just "I don't like it". Something is not overrated just because I personally dislike it.

I'd see overrated as this sort of thing:

• Before the season starts, Man City are predicted to win the league and several other trophies. The pundits and fans describe them as having the best team ever assembled. They end up trophyless and finish in 7th place in the league. I'd agree they were overrated at the start of the season.

• A new movie comes out to rave reviews and everyone gushes over it. Ten years later, it's pretty much forgotten and the majority of people would describe it as "ok". I'd agree it was overrated on release.

• A singer releases their first album, the critics love it, millions of people buy the album. The singer is described as the new *insert legendary singer here* and that they are predicted to have an amazing 30 year career. Their next album is universally despised and they fade away never releasing another song. I'd agree they were overrated as an artist when they first broke.

To put it more simply, overrated (to me) would be something that is at first loved by the majority, but later the majority think is a bit naff/disappointing.

Just saying "lol Formula 1 is overrated" is just vapid nonsense. What the person means is either "I don't like it!", "people are wrong to like it" or "tee hee, this comment will annoy people!". So they are either ignorant, arrogant or an irritant.

And I don't like Formula 1.

No, just something that was actually overrated rather than just "a popular thing that I personally dislike".

I'm pretty into Souls games and I see people being enthusiastic and encouraging about them far more than I see people being mean, both here and on Reddit / Twitter / etc. The biggest voices are always the nicest too - the most popular Souls "content creators" on YouTube (e.g. Vaati, IronPineapple, Zullie) tend to have very pleasant, positive personas.

I understand it only takes one bad interaction with an idiot to make someone feel a bit angry or embarrassed - I sympathise with that - but it's not been my experience that any of the games have, overall, some kind of really terrible toxic fanbase.

I can't stand them personally, but I don't think overrated is the right word - they're clearly well made and good at what they do, and what they're made to do is be difficult and unforgiving. That's not really what I'm looking for from a game nowadays, but I can at least accept the build quality of the game.

Also, I do agree that a lot of members of the fanbase I've come across are, well, toxic. Not on here or any of the streamers I've seen who play the games, but certainly on places like Reddit they're horrendous.

Yeah, the Fromsoftwares fanbase tends to be pretty vile, not Rocket League "I'm going to rape your family" vile, but pretty shitty.
