There's some additional free DLC up on the PS Store. You can download an extra car and two bits of car kit.

Thinking about this reminded me of the Games Workshop game Gorkamorka, which drew heavily from Mad Max and replaced the people with Orks:

Which in turn got me thinking about 2 things:

1) how this game would be perfectly suited to the Nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor
2) how much I'd love a Gorkamorka videogame that played almost exactly like Mad Max does. Oh well.

Progressed a bit further after last night's quick spin. Me and my pal Chumbucket have collected a shell for the Magnum Opus and I've duffed up a few guys and grabbed some fuel.

The graphics are terrific; I love the styling of the wasteland and the light and shadows are excellent. The fighting is good - I've heard others say that it's similar to the Batman Arkham games, but I've barely played them - it is crunchy and feels great.

Early days, but I'm really pleased so far. I can see myself getting well into it.

It is very much Batman-like - from the free-flowing attacks, Y/triangle counters, you can even change the controls to have dodge on the B/circle button. Even the slow-mo end shot of the last guy you beat down is in that style.

The graphics are indeed fantastic, and it runs at a decent clip with only a very brief hiccup when you cross what must be lines that trigger loading the next area in detail. The videogamer.com review is spot-on in several ways; the game HAS to be big and empty for the car combat to work, otherwise you wouldn't have room to get about.

I hope the 'threat' number is just a progress metric; that there are still bad guys driving around even after you take down all the totems and capture all the bases, or else you're gradually going to remove everything there is to do in the game. I'm not too bothered about the forts; taking them is fun but not the main emphasis, which is being out on the road. Also Dinki-di

Done 12 hours so far. Got a good amount of upgrades for Max and the car. all but upgraded the base.

One thing that does worry me though. Do the upgrades transfer to other cars or do I have to keep buying them?

I've seen the map and there seems to be multiple bases that I can upgrade too. Gonna be a long time until I finish this game.

Love chasing down the cars and destroying them. I've got a few base upgrades that mean i don't need to collect car scap as its automatic. Also re gen ammo, water and fuel at the base so life is a little easier now.

Wish my image sig would work

I believe the car bodies are just another part you can change so don't transfer per se - but I believe the other factions' cars you can capture out in the wild and use come as-is and can't be altered.

The layer-cake of upgrading systems is quite engaging in a behavioural psychology way, I'm trying to play smart and upgrade the things that give more scrap as early as possible, but there is a lot to do.

Having so much fun with this now that I'm in the world proper with all the basics on my car, taking out a convoy was great. The resource balance is fantastic, shotgun shells being rare means that choosing to blow up a car is a decision as you'll need to break from combat and scavenge before you can do it again.
It really is surprisingly pretty, a good example of art direction being more important than just requiring powerful graphics cards

Once you get out of Chumbucket's little corner of the world the game does open up a lot, and yeah, it's a credit to Avalanche that they can make barren dusty nothing so appealing.

The map really is massive - I didn't appreciate how big it was from just looking at the preview vids. I like how Gastown is always there, sitting in the distance belching fire. I haven't taken on a convoy yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Also fuel doesn't really seem to be an issue - I've never come close to running out; I guess the people playing it on previews were idiots and forgot to refuel.

10% complete as of last night

Loving it, captures the Mad Max world really well. I also really like the "survival" elements. They are there for flavour, not to encroach on gameplay, and that works perfectly.

I never run out of fuel. I find combat to be a bit hit and miss, not as flowing as Batman or Mordor. Still fun though.

The sniper rifle is really well done and the car combat is the best I've ever seen. I can't wait to get the flames and thunderpoon throwing sticks. Then combat will really open up.

I've got the car fully covered in spikes but the war boys still get on and cling on kicking me in the face. Little gooseberry fools they are.

I found a new area with enemies with painted blue faces. The character design and the car design is just fantastic.

One of those games that really doesn't need DLC as its big enough to last for a good 60 hours to find everything.

Wish they had released this the same day as the blu-ray. Must rank as one of the worst launch day choices ever. Why release against another open world game which is 5 years in the making on an unstoppable hype train. They could have even done a double buy pack with the blu-ray or a discount off one if you buy the other.

Much like Mordor I'll be telling everyone to buy it.

Wish my image sig would work

If the game had been DayZ-like I would have avoided it like the plague - as it stands there's enough to, as you say, give a flavour without worrying about dying of thirst or hunger etc. Its just enough to be necessary every now and again, but doesn't get in the way of doing cool gooseberry fool.

To me this game is a lot like Far Cry 2; I think there is going to be a MASSIVE amount of bloat in the middle of the game before the end, and I can see that driving people away, but (hopefully) sticking with it will be rewarding.

As someone who platinumed Just Cause 2 (a fact I like to bring up as often as possible) I can safely say a bloated midgame will be unlikely to drive me away.

Fuel seems like it will never be an actual problem, but it lends so much to the whole world by just being there. Although at some point I might have to deliberately run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere, just to see what that's like.

Damn, even I didn't have the patience for that - did you try and go for the 100% completion too (even though it's not technically possible on an unmodded game)?

I got over 90% and decided that was far enough - even that was over 100 hours playtime (but this being JC2, I'm sure plenty of that was just messing around grappling things together).

I'm not even sure what the maximum possible percentage on console is? I think it's somewhere around 96%, but last time I checked there were only a couple of confirmed reports on the wiki from people who had done it.

There was a load of stuff straight up missing from the game or inaccessibly placed under the map, on PC someone modded them back in for 100%, but I never got that far.

As for Mad Max, I can tell i'm going to get obsessive about getting all the scrap from locations and possibly playing rusty car pokemon trying to capture all the various vehicles.

I couldn't find one scrap in that first oil place you attack in Chumbucket's area. I went round it 3 times.

I am still frustrated

That's what's extra weird about it coming out on the same day as MGS, both games are copying 2's method of scouting out camps and then approaching them, something which hasn't really been taken on by many games but now two from the same day are doing it

Surprised at how little the chumbucket is annoying me

Me too - I think his enthusiasm and mostly positive demeanor makes up for him being as mad as a box of frogs; he makes up for Max's monosyllabic mumblings and is the narrative conduit for the world - much like the wraith from Shadows of Mordor really.

There was a man named Max he lived in a wastland and was stripped of his wheels with not even a penny to his name
but oddly his game ran like silk and 60fps and his game was complete.

There was a man named Bruce he was a billionaire with a tank and a jet he lived in modern times
but oddly his game was a giant turd with a 34.99 season pass and was capped at 30fps.

Go figure.
