For Tragic you can buy the Case Files for a tenner each and they collect everything pretty much from over the 30+ storylines.

Stand out storylines are

America
Necropolis
Pretty much anything under the Democracy storyline.

Id also pick some classic early storylines like the day the law died, the judge child and the apocalypse war.

Oops, these have been mentioned above.

Anung, do you still sub to 2k? I did until l sat year when I decide to cut some costs. Very tempted to go back though, or could just buy collections.

Also when he chucks Caleb off the balcony after him being made out to be quite the threat.

Did anyone else find the ending to be quite anti-climatic yet somehow satisfying? Almost because she wasn't waiting up there with some huge surprise to turn the end fight into the long, protracted fight or something.

I think I might start reading some of the comics. Is it ever really explained why he's so detached from everything? From what little I know about the comics, the other Judges aren't really like him at all.

"It's all the deep end." 8-)

He is very different in that he was part of an abandoned program to clone judges. It went very well with him but it went very badly wrong with others like Rico and Kraken.

He is the perfect clone of Chief Justice Fargo, a genetically cloned law machine , never meant to be anything other than a law machine.. And yet oddly he has started to feel and started to show signs of sympathy and empathy in recent years.

I loved that it's essentially a restaging of the opening. Mama thinks she's got the upper hand, that Dredd will have to forego his usual black and white interpretation of the law, that a compromise will be reached as surely he wouldn't endanger all those civilians? So he throws her out the strawberry floating window. YEAH.

I liked the ending, its simple and fairly non hollywood, he does his job bascially at the end of the day by taking her out. Its kinda like some of the books and stories, lots of gooseberry fool goes down, but by the end Dredd gets his man (or woman in this case) and does what is needed.

Possibly shouldn't be reading a thread for a film you haven't seen?

"Dredd kills the bad guy" is now a spoiler, apparently.

The movie did surprise me in one or two ways though. Like when Dredd gets shot. The guy is quite clearly going in a row for him and you think "Oh, he's going to jump out of the way now." but he doesn't and he just gets shot. It really takes him out, as well, and you think "Huh? That's not supposed to happen." Then when he does his basic field dressing and is basically back at 100%.:datass:

Yes, that scene does throw me off.

But it still doesn't change a thing. He's frickin' Judge Dredd and you knew that he will survive it, no matter what. That is the problem with comic book heroes... You knew most of the time that the main character will survive and trumiph.

One thing I wasn't sure on though, at the start when they first meet and interview Anderson, she's asked to use her psychic powers to determine how many people are on the other side of the mirror, and she correctly answers 2, and then goes onto say how Dredd has this controlled anger, and yet underneath there is...and then other judge suddenly cuts her off.

Is this alluding to something about Dredd that the comics explain?

Hey that's a good question. I too was wondering if there was something in that. :simper:

He's a clone.

Unless they are going to added something, but in all honesty he's not the type of character to have any secrets, I've read alot of Dredd and I can't think of anything.

Case files.

Got to start some where, start at the beginning...

The only thing about the case files is that Dredd takes a while to really get going. In particular, Dredd only really makes much sense in the context of Mega City One. It’s such a ruthless, dangerous, sprawling, edge-of-anarchy place that it takes an equally ruthless lawman to keep it in check. Out of that context, he’d just be a monster. I don’t think either Dredd or the Meg are properly realised for a little while in the early comics. Volume 1, for example, has a lot of weaker stories and if you started from there you might be put off. I’d say 3 or 4 are better places to start from. There’s still a way to go to develop from there, but they’re quite fun and you can always go back again, if you want.

Excellent film, though. And as for Andersen’s comment on what’s beneath the control? I’d have said it’s loneliness, isolation, distrust and bitterness from putting the law above all personal considerations. He can’t trust anyone, can’t put others at risk, can’t show any compassion or it appears as weakness. Then again, I’m probably wrong and maybe that’s the point of Dredd – a sort of blank page to put your own interpretation on. Or perhaps they were hoping to make some sequels and that comment would have come back in a longer running arc. Ah well.
