Some of you guys may know this already but, back in the mid '80s, lots of - mainly Japanese - companies created a unfied computer / gaming platform called
MSX. The MSX operating system, created by Microsoft, was a shared format for which companies could then create their own computers that supported it. It was a lovely idea as games could then be created and run on multiple systems.
It was fairly popular in Japan and parts of Europe but it never really caught on against the likes of the existing Commodore 64 and then the Commodore Amiga, Atari ST and the rise of the PC. Only a small number of MSX systems made it to the UK, the most popular machine of which was the Toshiba HX10:
It could be cool to see a "standard" console format for which companies could build their own machines around it.
