So far it's all good and nice, finest quality father son acting and facial animations, besides the customisations the gameplay isn't anything new from previous games. The franchise has always had a linear path and that's been absolutely fine, it's the genre. This game widens that linearity, or at least tries to hide the walls but so far there was a part where it felt too on rails, like I was being led down one very pretty but boring corridor. I'm still early in the game so expect to see the game 'open up.'
Was just about to write something similar. I don’t mean to do the game down at all, it’s really bloody good and I’ve played about 10 hours today. The relationship between Kratos and Atreus is fantastic, the presentation is beautiful and the combat is getting toward top tier. The scores though and some of the ‘Imagine Zelda with good story, Last of Us with good combat’ etc etc is more than a little overblown from what I’ve played. For the way way it’s been talked about and reviews have aggregated I’d kind of expect moment to moment gameplay to just be a non-stop thrill ride, a constant grin on my face, can’t wait to see what’s around the next corner etc. But for me at the moment it’s just not quite that. The environments aren’t that intriguing and since the first few hours the story has kind of meandered off course to the point that I don’t really know what I’m doing anymore. There was a bit before
Alfheim where the
witch spoke solidly for about 5 minutes and it was just a stream of nonsense I had no interest in. During the first big fight in the game where Atreus is hiding you get the sense the game is going down a certain path and it felt really strawberry floating cool and I wanted to see where it went. It just dropped that like a stone though and now it’s just a bit Sad Dad simulator.
That’s the only real gripe though, it’s a blood cracking game. Chucking the axe about and smashing fools won’t ever get old I think. Can definitely see myself playing through for a second time to scale up the combat.
