I'd be hesitant to read too much into the wording although - of course - if there is a consistent theme then it should be queried.
Just looking at a newer BBC report and the exact opposite is used:
BBC News wrote:Three days after Hamas launched a murderous assault on Israel, more than 900 people are known to have died. Retaliatory strikes on Gaza have killed almost 690, Palestinian authorities say.
This suggests that people in Israel "died" from the attacks whilst people in Gaza where "killed" by the attacks.
Of course, some may question the "murderous assault" phrasing but I'd imagine that, in terms of the attack, it's probably hard to argue with.
