Had to rewire a school loft area a few back because squirrels ate through parts of the outer cable sheath , squirrels and rats find the cable outer sheath sweet.

Don't blame the squirrels and rats for your own incompetence to keep a cable away from the squirrels and rats. Either that or get some toys and y'know actually play with the squirrels and rats with the proper equipment so the squirrels and rats won't feel the need to try and find enjoyment in random cables.

My god Steeps controls are strawberry floating dire, how the strawberry float do you get push forward = fast, pull back = slow, wrong? For every jump off a platform to wingsuit I would jump in the wrong direction 15 times and land on the strawberry floating platform.

Hope this is the right thread for this.

I'm speccing a new PC for gaming (VR and sim racing mostly). I've been out of the pc gaming loop for so long that I need to ask a few questions:

This is my wishlist for the new pc:

Now while it's costing a lot of money (stick the vive on top of that :dread: ), I still have my old gaming pc from back in the 17th century:

Now this is a pentium 4, with a X1900XTX. I know it's laughable tech nowadays, but I'm thinking I may be able to take the two old DVD and DVD RW drives out of it and put them in the new one. Optical media is as good as dead now, but I have a lot of old games on DVD that I'd like to use again, so a drive of some sort is nessasary. May only save £50 but every little helps.

Has the technology moved on to the point I can't use those, or would the drivers be the issue?

I may also take the hdd and put it in the new one as a place just to put general gooseberry fool like photos, as it's got windows xp installed on it, would that be an issue?

Thanks in advance

Are those IDE dvd drives? if so that may be an issue, it would be easier to just get a new dvd writer for £15 instead of messing around with an ide to sata connector.

Hi...

I built a computer relatively recently (2014) using some parts from an older PC (purchased 2009). I used the DVD drive, PSU (which I have subsequently replaced) and an old hd drive as additional storage (an SSD drive is my primary drive). They were all still compatible with the motherboard so I see no issues for you. In fact, Windows XP is still installed on the old hd drive, along with old backups, etc. It's not causing any harm - the boot sequence just ignores this drive and goes to the SSD drive first, causing no issues. This can be set in the BIOS on start up quite easily.

Edit: You're correct, Xeno, those don't look like SATA connections which might make things tricky.

Cheers guys. The connection from the PSU looks like this, and there's a broad grey ribbon cable out the back going to the motherboard.

Although I've built my own PC, I'm still a bit of a novice but as far as I understand, I think these might not be compatible with more recent PSUs, I'm afraid. My power connectors (unsure of the name) are slightly different to those and lead to very 'flat' adapters for the peripherals. All of these cables came with the PSU - so you may be able to buy adapters for the power leads you have, but you will also - I expect - need adapters for the 'data' (the leads that plug into the motherboard). The leads that go from the motherboard to the peripherals (apart from the very new SSDs that plug directly into the newer motherboards) are all SATA now. I think your motherboard and peripherals predate this, I'm afraid.

Thanks guys, looks like I'll just order a single DVD burner then.
