Yeah, okay, so not really a shock.

Sad news, chums. Olden UK PC games mag PC Zone has closed, apparently. It’s finished and they’ve all read it.

The next issue will be the last, RPS has been told by a whole bunch of people. And seen, on a company webpage and stuff. Honestly, we’re not just spreading muck here. Farewell, then, to the UK’s first PC games mag. Trails were blazed. It Was Important. And now it’s gone.

Best of luck to everyone on the mag. You will do well.

Meh, PC Gamer has always been better and is the longest running of the two. No loss.

I haven't bought a copy in over ten years, but I'll miss it. I used it to buy and read it religiously during the mid to late 90s. When Charlie Brooker used to write for them. I also got to deathmatch against them on Doom, when they held a nationwide competition.

Surprised it was still going to be honest, magazines have become pretty much redundant with the advent of gaming websites and such.

This has been inevitable for ages. Future unfortunately bought it, ruined it, & basically put it in an unsalvageable position.

On the plus side, their gaming portfolio is now, overall, of a considerably much better standard than it was 5/6 years ago.

And BTW...

Actually, PC Gamer is on issue 216, whereas PC Zone is well into the 220s. So PC Zone is slightly older. Well, was.

I'd guess this must have been quite a late decision, as you can still subscribe (as of this particular moment) on myfavouritemagazines. Unless there was a lack of communication between the two.

PC Zone blogged in May "TO BE HONEST IT HASN'T BEEN A VERY GOOD MORNING" so - CONSPIRACY THEORISTS - maybe this was it. Or, you know, they were just having a bad day.

I read it back in the 90s, but the idea of any single format magazine seems increasingly difficult to justify. What magazines may still have over websites is editorial skills- but even sites now have great writers ...

Official response:

PC Zone wrote:Yes, it's true. Following a strategic review of Future's PC games portfolio, the company is now consulting the PC Zone team about the proposed closure of the magazine, with effect from issue 225 (on-sale 2nd September).

That's all we can say for now. But rest assured: if 225 does turn out to be PC Zone's final issue, we're going to break ourselves to make it a bloody brilliant finale to 17 years and 5 months of the best PC gaming magazine the world's ever seen.

The PC Zone Team

I don't know whether this would be possible, but it'd be great if they had the cover of every single issue accompanied by a retrospective feature. I wonder if they'll be able to rope Brooker & Diamond in to writing something?

You just don't get this type of stuff any more; Charlie Brooker phones Eidos (on behalf of PC Zone):

In case there was any doubt, it's now official.

PC Zone Blog wrote:It's official: PC Zone is closing. Following the consultation announced last week, it has been decided the magazine won't continue.

There is a public statement. Here it is:

"Following consultation, we're sorry to announce that we've now taken the difficult decision to close PC Zone. The magazine on sale in September will be the final issue.

"PC Zone is the smallest of our three PC gaming magazines and this decision has been made as we look to strengthen our other two PC titles, PC Gamer and PC Format, in print and online.

"We're actively seeking other opportunities for the four members of staff affected by PC Zone's closure. I'd like to thank them for all of their great work on the magazine over a number of years."

James Binns, Head of Edge international and PC Gaming, Future Publishing

Well that's that then. We didn't let PC Zone go down without a fight, but our enemy was to vast and too powerful for us to vanquish. (That'd be the internet - what you're reading this on.)

So issue 225, out on the 2 September, will definitely be the last-ever PC Zone. We are making it a fitting tribute to the mag - hands old and new are coming together to see us off, and you have a chance to join in as well.

If you want to be part of this special issue send in your memories of the magazine to letters@pczone.co.uk or tweet them to us at @pczone.

The most brilliant memory, or the one that makes us weep like small children, will win its owner a fantastic prize, culled from the years of detritus in the soon-to-be-empty office.

We want you all to be part of this final PC Zone, which will truly be The End.
