Hi all!

I'm a student - which makes me, necessarily, both lazy and poor - so I eat a lot of sandwiches.

When I'm buying bread for my sandwiches, I tend to get either granary or seeded Hovis depending on my mood.

For lunch more days than not I'll make myself a nice cheese and pickle sandwich. Again, I'm just a lazy student, so I tend to go with nice thick slices of mature cheddar and a generous serving of Branston pickle.

Often, for dinner, I'll have my sandwich with cheese, some pre-sliced breaded ham (again, lazy), with mixed salad leaves and mayonnaise.

Do you eat sandwiches? What sandwiches do you like? Have any recommendations for mixing my sandwich routine up?

This thread is for inclusive and friendly sandwich chat only. Any negative comments about sandwiches in general, or being mean about other members' sandwich preferences, will make me feel sad ( :( ) and will therefore result in a permanent thread ban ( ).

I'm trying to cut back on expenditure* so my lunchtime sandwiches for the past few weeks have been brown bread with chicken paste. And that's it.

It's cheap and it does the job. If I'm pushing out the boat I'll add a tomato into the mix.

* mainly due to every gaming thing ever launching in May and June.

EDIT: DML, that's what I was thinking :-).

You need not be rich to eat good food, seeded bread isn't too expensive and I really like it.

However, I found that the fat bastard me from six months ago was eating ludicrous amounts of bread(we're talking like, a loaf every two or three days), so I replaced it largely in my diet with wholegrain wraps, which are outstanding as well.

Nowadays if I'm going to have a sandwich I go with white bread, and for fillings it'll probably be cheese and ham, with a liberal dash of salad cream.

OK, poor is relative; I can spare a quid or two a week for slightly nicer bread. But I probably won't be buying the finest smoked salmon or Aberdeen Angus steak to put in my sandwiches.

Let's focus on sandwich chat here, after all, all sandwich-eaters are equal under God.

Ham, Stilton, Mayo and Baby Spinach is a nice one too, especially in seedy bread.

I have to say SquintyMcSquint I am a big fan of the 'lots of nutella' sandwich, particularly with slightly toasted bread. It's often my breakfast. Maybe peanut butter would be a good next step.

I've won 3 free lunches from Walkers these last couple of weeks (up to the value of £4). Sainsbury's were a bit feeble with their selection so I settled on ham and mustard.

Though I do eat loaves (mainly toast), I'm not too big on 'classic' sandwiches at lunch time as it's not really filling enough. I do love an M&S baguette though, with variations on lettuce, cheese, tomato and ham.

Can't beat a good quality bacon and egg sandwich with HP sauce though.

Lettuce, smoked turkey and spicy Mexicana cheese is really nice.

When I work nights I make a fat load of them and just stuff myself all through the shift. Keeps my mood up.

For me, simple is best. I hate doughy bread, so a ham and cheese baguette with butter and a touch of mayo is basically perfection. Needs to be all good quality ingredients though.

Sandwiches are one of the best things ever.

My favourite being a ridiculously unhealthy Christmas leftover sandwich, but only once/twice a year.

others include

peanut butter with jam
grilled prosciutto, slices of mozzarella, rocket, tomato and pesto mayo.
meatball and sauce with cheese.
muffalata - deli meats, pickled veg mix, olives, provolone, mozzarella in foccacia
pastrami, mustard, pickles and cheese
bacon sandwich of course.
goats cheese, aubergine slices, rocket and mushrooms
steak, horseradish, rocket, caramelised onions, mushrooms.

I would recommend spelt bread for anyone who hasn't tried it

Fave sandwiches:

red salmon
smooth peanut butter & strawberry jelly
cheddar, mayo & ketchup (pref. with one slice of the bread toasted)
crisp sandwich w/ cheese spread (cheese & onion, prawn cocktail, or doritos work best)
BACON (properly grilled... on a grill pan on some foil. Mop up the fat from the foil with one slice of the bread) poss. w/ melted cheese on top if I'm feeling properly indulgent
corned beef
fish fingers and ketchup

if I'm in a mega rush and I've got some in, a quick sardine & tomato paste sarnie will do me, but that's not quite in the tier of the above list. Likewise just a peanut butter sandwich.

YES. Turkey, cold stuffing, mini pigs in blankets, maybe some beef :toot:

Sandwiches

brown bread > white bread

The best bread for a sandwich is entirely dependent on what's in it. Even the best artisan produced sourdough sits a distant second to a cheap supermarket white loaf for a chip butty.
