Men are around and will either be in independent kingdoms or will be living under the Elves. Numenor is a kingdom of men and is a great power but it is a long long way from Middle Earth.
The Balrog destroyed Moria long before the events of the Hobbit. Balin went back to Moria to reclaim it, the Dwarves figured the Balrog was gone/dead or that they could overpower it. The death of Smaug and reclaiming the Lonely Mountain made them a little overconfident.
The Shire might not have existed, but the area that would become it certainly did. I could easily see the story moving through Eriador and showing a possible Halfling settlement, maybe an off-the-cuff reference or some such to the "little people" or whatever they might've been known as at the time. I just don't think the producers or writers of the show would pass up an opportunity to reference them, given how iconic they are in the lore.
Numenor is a kingdom of men? Hmm, you know, I always kinda figured it for another Elven kingdom. Shows what I know, I guess.
I hope we get to see it. I'm sure we will. It was in the map included in the tweet, after all.
Oh, now that I did not know! I thought it was active and in its prime until betwixt the Hobbit and LotR, until a Balrog was awakened and ruined everything. I guess I was only partly right.
Hope this group gets to be included in the show.
