PostAsk GR: The cost of next gen games

As we approach the launch of the new Xbox and PlayStation consoles, it appears that "AAA" games will, generally, be more expensive than those on the current generation of systems.

Looking at retailer pre-order options, PS5 games are being priced up at around £60 to £90 whilst we do not yet know the pricing point for many Xbox titles; I'd expect them to be similar.

It's time to Ask GR and hear what YOU think about game pricing; what will you be willing to pay and whether you'll buy at launch or await a price cut... or, maybe you won't be buying at all!

I recognise that subscription services such as Game Pass will be a popular option for playing games but, for this thread, the idea is to get a feel on the thinking around actually buying games.

£70, so long as that’s the complete edition. If they expect me to buy a season pass etc, the initial game had better be more like £50.

EDIT: Bearing in mind the huge savings from using Game Pass, I’m less concerned about the price of the handful of games that I will actually buy.

I'll HAVE to pay £70 if I actually want something to play once I get a ps5, but once launch is over with, £50 is the max I will pay for a game. That goes for switch games too.

It really depends on both the game and my free time as to whether I'll buy at launch or wait, but anything over £60 feels like a huge jump from current gen pricing.

The idea for this thread was driven by reading over this Eurogamer article on next gen game pricing.

For me, money is tight at present and so I'm planning to stick with current consoles for the foreseeable future. If things change, I think fifty quid would be my personal limit and so I'd anticipate waiting for price reductions based on current price marks.

I appreciate that the RRP for games hasn't gone up a huge amount from the usual £40 of the GameCube/PS2/Xbox days. Even then, I'd expect to pay no more than £30 for a new release from Amazon. That being said, practises like microtransactions and season passes/DLC add to the base cost of a game so I'm not keen on prices above £50 for games, especially if there may be additional costs (the caveat being that sometimes DLC can be worth the price).

Seeing the £70 or so price tag for PS5 games makes me very glad that I'll be holding off buying one until long into the future. Only Spider-Man and Demon's Souls interest me but I've completed the latter and can still play the former on PS4.

As I'm disc based I'll be waiting for games to bomb or drop enough to buy, I don't mind waiting a long time for them.

50 snoops is my absolute limit.

I only have a Switch and I've little intention of purchasing an Xbox or PS5 whilst the pricing of games for those systems remains so high.

As primarily a PC gamer I tend to balk at anything over £30. I can count on one hand the times I have spent more than that on a new PC game in the last 10 years.

For very specific games on console I am prepared to go over that amount, but it really is only for something genuinely special like a GOAT candidate Zelda or Mario game.

Up to £50 for me, seemed to have been £40 for far too long however, I know that once new consoles come out they are normally high for a while than tend to settle down.

I wouldn't currently pay £60 for a game and more likely to wait until they drop.

I dont currently spend more than £20 on PS4 games. I wait for the drop. I'd hope to do the same next gen to be honest.

£70 is a complete and utter joke, not matter how good a game is.
I expected a small rise maybe to £55-£60 but £70 it's a p*ss take, hopefully after 3-6 month prices will drop.

50.

Depends entirely on your circumstances. If you live with your parents and have loads of disposable income then I'm sure it would be more.

I'm getting both the series X and PS5 at launch with just 2 games that are getting free upgrades to next gen (Dirt 5 on PS5 £55 and Cyberpunk on box £48) and apart from Last of Us 2 multiplayer that's all I'm thinking of buying at the moment.

I think going past £60 per game will be a huge mistake as people will just buy less overall and be less likely to take a punt on something they're 50/50 on. It will mean way more people waiting for a game to go on sale.

£50 is more than enough for the current gen releases, so there's not a chance in hell i'd pay even more for next gen.

This, and generally more than happy to wait a while after launch for a decent sale, unless its a new release I'm particularly excited about, but even then I really don't think I could justify much over £40.

I take a long look at anything over £20 that doesn't come with all the extra content, but then have actively cut down my gaming interests to "Yakuza, historical/modern strategy and Warhammer 40,000 games" so am pretty much done with the whole thing anyway. I assume this £60-70 is still the cost for the basic/starter/shell game with all the expansions and battlepasses in addition on top of that?
