jawa's verdict

Okay... now obviously the Amico isn't a replacement, or even a challenger, for the power consoles such as those marketed by Sony and Microsoft. It's looking to reach the mass market; perhaps the kind that used to play on the Nintendo Wii and DS systems before moving on to mobile platforms. Intellivision is looking to get families and friends playing videogames in front of the television again by delivering a relatively low-cost system that has a variety of simple games at attractive prices. The core tech in the system is mobile based but adds the unique controllers that have some interesting features that could encourage fun play techniques.

I feel that Intellivision has a tough task in terms of raising awareness of the system. They're a relatively small company who won't have a huge marketing budget but they have to try and get people to check the system out. On paper, the game pricing could prove very attractive compared to the pricing of other console formats. The games will be much simpler, of course; but that could be an attraction in itself for much of the target audience.

Lets see how this pans out!

Jawa, how did you even find out about this? Are you being paid to advertise this?

That gameplay trailer just looked like a really crap Mario Party collection of mini games.

I love the idea of it.

But, I just think you can get a Mega drive classic for a fraction of the price.

Fine you can't play 4 player there, but 2 player anyway & it's loaded with classic 'simple' games. That actually went down a treat with my nephews and had everyone scrabbling to play together.

I can't see this catching on, much as I'd love it to.

£250 system cost kills any chance this might have had.

What are they doing with that pricing

Honestly, it looks terrible. Does anyone actually want this? At £250 it’s dead on arrival.

I hope I’m proven wrong and it’s excellent, full service of great games and popular.

Why are they aligning the price with the Xbox Series S? It's nowhere near the Series S in appeal, power, or games.

Looks bloody awful in every way, I don't know why companies think they can just enter the console space with it being the way it is now. Look at stadia, and that's got Ian Google behind it.

I like the idea of games being like 3 to 10quid, it seems very spectrumy but the price point for the system is too high, also fair enough touch screen, disc and motion controls but how about a simple d pad and an A, B and pause.

Id sooner see an 80 quid unit with a more basic controller with the 3 to 10quid games and put software out there to help people make games for it using a pc that they can then submit for release on a profit share basis. Maybe this sounds silly but its what id see as an alternative to the current types of console and something id potentially buy.

Hee! I'd kinda thought that the system may not appeal to most GRcadians  .

I genuinely like the idea of the console, though; family/friends multiplay with potentially new and interesting control mechanisms. The £250 price point looks a tough ask but you do get two controllers and six games pre-loaded. The game pricing itself is attractive, too.

It's a good shout to say that the Xbox Series S is the same price... but the type of games and the cost of them differs; I think they're aimed at different parts of the market. It'd be great if the price point could be £199 but, recognising that Intellivision is not a huge company and they need to provide support for games developers, that may not be possible. The team behind the system have a lot of passion for the project and I like that.

There's no doubt that I think the Amico could have a difficult time gaining attention but I do hope that it can finds it's market. I am keen to jump on board with the system but I'll see how things go over the next six months until release.

In the meantime, I'll fly the Club Amico banner and keep this thread updated with developments :-).

One of the games that I'm most looking forward to seeing is Night Stalker. It's a remake of the original 80s game and it looks to have kept the basic approach whilst ramping up the graphic and sonic effects. The "blob" aliens and level transitions look particularly nice. I could imagine this being pretty fun in multiplayer mode.

I think a £99 price point and they might have got some interest.

£250 though :slol:

Yeah, the price point is a tough call, Tom. The two controllers do have colour touch screens on them, as well as the disc, buttons, gyro and microphone , and I think they form a unique selling point for the system. Having watched a few game vids, I think they could be used in some interesting ways. The idea is that they can be used by folk who wouldn't necessarily find a, say, Dualshock 4 easy to use; they could present a more natural way of playing, rather like the Wii Remotes... which were indeed quite divisive amongst more "core" gamers!

I would love to see a £199 price point but that may be tough to hit. The game pricing makes up for it, though; with a range of around £3 to £10 this could be appealing to folk who don't want to pay the generally higher prices associated with the more powerful consoles.
