I do echo the concerns about the serious vibe that's coming from it instead of the cheesy angle. They are clearly trying to appeal to the adults in their 20s and 30s who watched Power Rangers as a kid.
Personally i would have preferred that it was set in the original timeline and is just 20 years after the original series ended. Have the story that the original rangers disappeared and they find the old rangers layer, reactivate Alpha 5 etc.. You don't have to have any original rangers in it but just allow it to be in the same universe. Some of the original rangers could then appear in a sequel or at the very end of this film. Maybe only one hasn't disappeared, Tommy is the most likely one as he has reappeared in various incarnations of Power Rangers over the years.
There was talk that Bulk and Skull aren't in it, i assume because of the more seriousness nature of the film as they were always comic relief. I assume the ginger haired bully in the trailer wont be called bulk or skull.
One more thing, i've noticed a recent trend of calling some trailers teaser trailers when they are clearly just trailers, surely this is a full on trailer and not a teaser trailer at all? Teaser trailers used to be when they didn't show any actual film footage.
I think the problem with it being in the original timeline is that all the series since are based in that timeline and they'd end up having to try and keep the tone and feel appropriate for that so it definitely wouldn't appeal to the audience they're going for.
I initially had reservations about a more serious tone but like you say they're trying to appeal to adults who watched Power Rangers as a kid, I'm hoping there'll still be an element of fun to it. Tonally I hope its more akin to recent Marvel films than DC ones.
