Get ready, Jen... it's happening. Hopefully as soon as later this afternoon. It's time.

Time for...

GRcade plays: Dark Souls

And everyone's invited  .

The call is becoming too strong to resist!

I'd be interested to give it a go on PC this time, I loved playing it on Switch but it would be easier to stream from my PC which would be fun. Does anyone know if the Remastered version is any good on PC? I know the original PC release was a bit of a mess that needs fan mods/patches to sort out but hopefully they've improved on that?

"I'm excited!" by the response; it feels like a number of folk are readying themselves to get back into the world of Souls.

I'm kinda thinking that all Souls games can be included - people are free to play whichever one they want - and also play from any point in the game so that, if some folk have already started, that's all cool.

All abilities are welcome so don't panic if - like me - it may take you several days (weeks!) to get past certain infamous bosses. The idea will be to get some chat going in the thread, where we can all talk about our progress, builds and share any tips if needed.

Right, I'm talking a good game so far but it's time to deliver. I'll have a wee think and create the thread later this afternoon. I don't think I'll keep a formal progress tracker as we did in the old "GRcade plays: Banjo-Kazooie" thread because we have three games in play.

If you're doing a mini-profile of those playing, please be sure to state that my specialist move is "running away" 8-)

I asked Miyazaki but he just laughed manically down the phone and hung up...? Not sure what that was about.

(Is there no way to remap the controls to swap the buttons? I thought you could do it under the Controllers and Sensors menu on the Switch?)

Yes! There is; in the game itself, iirc. I did this myself so that the button layout was the same as when I play on PS4.

Edit: Uhm, hold on, no... by default it may seems odd at first, but it is so that the layout matches the game on other systems.

So other than the button mappings being demonstrably wrong (maybe you can remap but I will just adapt it's fine really...)

- I'm a sorcerer so I can blast things and it is fun (when the lock on isn't being garbage)
- I've bought a house key and inventory management so my next goal is to buy the ability to repair things at a bonfire (because weapon degradation is apparently a mechanic that half exists)
- I turned off the camera auto wall recovery which was enabled by default and the game seemed to improve drastically; I could actually make a jump where previously the camera kept snapping left on a door frame and changing my direction
- My partner explained humanity and kindling; obtuse is putting it lightly
- Yes I still hate the menu UX

...Legitimately I'm having fun so far  It's already a lot better than DS2 as I haven't been shot in the back on every other staircase! I think discovering I got on better with sorcery in Elden Ring has helped a lot too.

Orange, this is not how to play Souls. You must hate it... and endure it.

For what it's worth, if you end up enjoying DS1, then I think you might somewhat reassess DS2 if you made a sorcerer character - it's the best build for avoiding the game's unique frustrations (its bigger crowds and longer aggro ranges, compared to the other Souls games).
