Gamecube games to be downloadable on WiiU?

Didn't take me long to transfer my kid's collection of Wii games onto portable hard-drive so that they could play all their games without faffing about with DVDs.

Just makes things so much more convenient.

If only you could rip Gamecube games onto it too without hard-modding.

That's quite an assumption considering you can already do that between DS/3DS.

I'm hoping for a GameCube themed classic controller. Tweak the Z-button a bit, make the D-Pad slightly bigger and put a proper analog stick where the Cunt Stick is and it'd be the perfect old-style controller for me.

Oh, and bundle it with Smash Bros. I love the look of the Wii U controller but I want a massive A button for my smashes.

It's not like you are forced to buy GC games. It can be a nice extra for some people.

The only positive is, as far as I know, Nintendo actually "buy" the rights to Virtual Console games from companies and then release them whenever they want, so in a sane world it should mean that they've already got the rights to any future version of the VC too. It's a service in "the cloud", not something specific to one format, or at least that is what it should be.

I'm in two minds over this. If they are reasonably priced God of War style HD remasters for stuff like Wind Waker then I'm all for it but if it turns out that they've disabled disc based GC backwards compatability so they can sell you the ROMs via the Virtual Console I wouldn't be that impressed.

Or, perhaps, the fact it requires support for controller ports, memory card slots and a proprietary disc format for a feature that how many of the userbase actually used? I'd say the controller ports on the Wii were used mostly by people playing Brawl, than actual people playing older GC games.

The "rebuying your games" stuff is a nice extra, of course, but it's a massive waste of time keeping the GC inputs around two generations after the console was actually released.

It will be easier to track them down as well. The VC has already made buying Sin and Punishment and Chrono Trigger a lot easier (and cheaper). If we get Chibi Robo, Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia etc then its only a good thing.

True this maybe, but it just seems such a cynical move by Nintendo. Why make brand new exciting games to sell that cost a strawberry floating fortune to develop when all these muppets rebuy all our old gooseberry fool for minimal costs of converting to a new a system. It prints money indeed.

Right, it's already been confirmed that all Wii controllers will work with WiiU. You owe me a week's pay.
