If I think of being obsessed with a game, the two stand outs would be:

Morrowind - I'd never seen or played anything like it. A friend introduced me to the game and I never looked back. God only knows how long I spent playing it, but it was probably a good 5 years of being my main game, and I only stopped playing becuase oblivion came out. Solid days sat at my gaming desk, drinking tea and eating biscuits (back when I wouldn't get fat doing so), with the big paper map unfolded and propped up next to me, picking a little point on the map and spending forever getting there. No compass, no quest tracker, no fast travel. Absolute gaming bliss

F1 97. I think I played this solidly from day 1 up until I got F1 99-02 On my pc. God it was such a great game. I absolutely mastered it by the end, I remember doing a full length Monaco gp in the wet, from cockpit cam (which was a first and awful back then) with it on the hardest difficulty, with the worst car, and I managed to lap the whole field on my way to the win without making a single mistake. Amazing game :datass:

Planet Coaster recently. One of those games where hours fly by without me even noticing.

No Man's Sky did it a couple of years ago now. So weird how many hundreds of hours I played that, but not actually turned it on since the much-anticipated VR mode was added.

Golf games, but I’m very particular - not to silly and cartoony, and not too hardcore. I detest the sport and wouldn’t watch it if I was paid, but there it is.

Streets Of Rage 4. I've now beaten it about six times.

I can't stand watching golf yet spent several hundred hours playing the PSP version of Everybody's Golf 2.

Football Manager, from 2012 to the current 2019 edition that I'm playing on my Switch as I type this post. Thousands upon thousands of hours :dread:
Skyrim - consumed me for weeks whenever I bought a different version of it :slol:

I think the games that I have really been into over the years are...

ISS Pro / Pro Evolution Soccer (1997 through 2003 on PS1; 2011 through 2014 on PS3; 2015 through 2019 on PS4)
I loved the game on PS1 (single player exhibition matches) but then fell away from the series before returning on PS3 and PS4 (exclusively online divisions mode). Dunno how many hours in total but the feel of the game has made the time totally worth it. Haven't really played for getting on to a year now, though :o .

Fallout 3 (Xbox 360)
I played through the storyline and all of the DLC and I was mesmerised by it; I loved the scale of the adventure and the ability to go where you want, whenever you want.

Mad Max (PS4)
I think this may be my fave game of the current generation. Sure, it's not groundbreaking in any particular area, but it all adds up to become so solid and enjoyable. I love the environments, the action, the exploration, the collecting and - most importantly - the feel. The action is so crunchy and slick.

Fallout 76 (PS4)
I know, I know  . But I was addicted to this; more just wandering around exploring and building rather than levelling up or progressing the storyline. I've plugged in around 730 hours and loved that time... although I've just recently stopped playing because I really dislike the enemy level changes and the move towards pre-built camp styles rather than pushing the previous more creative self-build styles. I barely played any other game on PS4 during this time so now I feel a bit lost!

Honourable mentions to Mercenary (C64), Championship Manager '93 (Amiga) and Kick Off 2 (Amiga).

JRPGs for me mostly. I struggle to get into many of them (many are slow starters), but once I’m in, I’m in. Xenoblade 2, Octopath, and now Ni No Kuni have all devoured me for a bit, and Octopath wasn’t even that good!

Otherwise, the Ace Attorney games for as long as they last generally tick this box, and puzzlers can too. I will regularly have dreams about puzzlers while I’m playing them, or see falling blocks/Picross/sushi when I close my eyes.

Animal Crossing was for me however, in recent weeks the appeal has died off for me. Maybe once winter comes around I’ll come back for a island redesign.

Apart from that its just playing through games from start to finish

PLAY | Persona 3 Reloaded [3h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S3, HiJack S1, Red Dwarf S4, Dexter S2
RACE | Chew Valley 10k (June), GNR (Sept), Cardiff Half (Oct)

Just in case any folk are dying to see my detailed response to Orange's question, please dive over to the Fallout 76 thread :-) .

Ah! I have this in my backlog and it looks good; I like it's colourful take on the post apocalypse. What did you think of it, SEP?

I'm rather enjoying it (hence the 11 hours yesterday). It's less substantial than Far Cry 5, but there are some "extra" bits that kind of make up for it.

Eve online was probably my biggest one. I didn't buy many games when I was playing that. Easily lost thousands of hours.
Factorio is a current one. 1000+ hours in that.
Minecraft
Civilisation.
