Russell T Davies: Doctor Who writer brands Nadine Dorries a ‘f***ing idiot’ as anger boils over on BBC future - The Doctor Who and It’s A Sin screenwriter warned that the Government wants to ‘control culture’
https://inews.co.uk/news/russell-t-davi ... re-1237012Ms Dorries, an outspoken critic of the BBC, was appointed Culture Secretary in the reshuffle last month in a move widely perceived to be an escalation of the Government’s so-called “war on woke.”
Before her appointment, she criticised the public service broadcaster for favouring what she said were “very left wing, often hypocritical and frequently patronising views”. In separate remarks, she suggested that “left-wing snowflakes” were destroying culture.
Since taking office last month she has ramped up pressure on the BBC, even questioning whether it would still exist in 10 years’ time, and saying that it needs to be “less elitist and snobbish”.
“The woman’s an idiot, a big f***ing idiot.”
He added: “I’m here to talk about the threat of public funding and the threat to public service broadcasting.”
He also criticised the Government for its handling of Channel 4, which aired his hit series It’s A Sin. “The threat that Channel 4 is under is even greater,” he said.
Asked if he thought Channel 4 would be privatised, Mr Davies said: “It’s doomed, nothing. It’s happened. It’s a fact, the Government has decided.
“Your loss, my loss, our loss and they’ll just give us some more bread and circuses to take our minds off it.”
Asked if the Government cares about culture, he added: “I think they care very much about controlling it. They are doing everything to change voting, rules. They’re doing everything to get in power and stay in power.”
Davies also criticised Ms Dorries over her claim that there was “nepotism”at the BBC, saying: “She talked about the BBC having nepotism when she employed her own daughter.”
Asked about previous comments he had made saying the BBC was under attack, and if it was the reason he had returned as the showrunner of Doctor Who, he said: “I’m always happy to work for the BBC because I love them and I think everyone should get in there, man those battlements and fight for that channel.
“We’ve got another 10-15 years of this Government, there’s no shifting them. They’re invulnerable somehow. So yes, I’m very, very happy to work with the BBC.”
