Amazon workers launch protests on Prime Day

Thousands of workers in Amazon sites around the world are staging protests about pay and conditions as the online retailer begins its annual sale.

On Monday, Amazon starts offering discounts to its Prime service members.

Unions say that 2,000 workers are on strike in Germany, while in the US, workers in a Minnesota centre reportedly plan a six-hour stoppage. In the UK, week-long protests are planned.

This extends to other amazon businesses, including twitch, audible, IMDB and goodreads, etc.

Unless it's a new author you'd like to support just download off IRC.

This.

IMO, I don't think consumers can actually do much to improve conditions for Amazon staff, its up to governments and unions taking action to ensure fair working conditions by means of legislation and striking/picketing.

It's a nawty way of acquiring books.

Then you can just use something like Calibre to stick them onto your kindle (and edit the covers, etc, if you're big on your metadata organisation)

That is what's happening, though?

Solidarity is important.

I was going to post about this but figured my SJW reputation would ensure it sank like a stone. Good on you Knoy.

Did my part: went into town and bought Mario Maker at FNAC. Cost me an extra few euros but strawberry float Amazon.

I'm working on buying less from Amazon. I don't pay out for Prime and, if I buy a game, then I usually order from ShopTo. I still tend to order the odd book from Amazon but, generally, I'm using them a lot less than in past years.

I wish I'd known this before I bought the damn PS Mini or whatever it's called.

I too would prefer not to buy from Amazon, but the dual issues of not having a lot of money and requiring an awful lot of academic books for research purposes mean that I have to use it semi-regularly. I did make a point of buying a cracking book about media practices in Vice, Buzzfeed and the New York Times from a great little LGBTQ bookshop near Edinburgh University recently though - it's important to support local bookshops as much as possible.

I’m not going to boycott Amazon because that’s completely impractical (as I found out recently just trying to find Stan and Ollie anywhere on the high street) but I’ve been buying less from them for a long time now and shopping with other retailers such as Argos and eBay outlets. Much easier to go directly to the manufacturer these days too (Zoom.co.uk for example being Universal Comcast). Unless you’re ‘doing Amazon properly’ they’re not definitively any cheaper then elsewhere or offer delivery any quicker. I also prefer having my parcels delivered by Royal Mail and DPD, not some bloke in a dilapidated Ford Escort.

I will be taking advantage of their month free Prime trial in December for the football though.

I think I've bought one thing from amazon in the last 5 years, and that's because I got gifted a voucher. It's not impractical, there are plenty of alternatives.

Yeah, but Amazon is easier and often faster, so that works for me.

I buy most things from Amazon. As in, most of the things I buy I get from Amazon.
