They bring it up frequently, but it’s difficult to recruit someone when you can’t afford to pay them. The fact that they’re all 30 something white dudes is a result of that being who was at GT when it closed rather than anything more sinister. If they were going to get someone in I think Pamela Horton would be a smart choice, she’s a woman for one, is funny, has an audience of her own and has worked with them before. I’ve seen some of her stuff and followed her on Twitter a bit, not anymore because she gets real bloody mopey sometimes. Her games content is decent, she just needs people to work with so EZA would be a great fit.
I don’t really think they’re playing it safe. Bosman is really the only natural ‘Youtuber’, for want of a better word, in the group to produce stuff like the above. Elyse was the same and really good, but she’s never coming back so pointless to speculate on it really. They also don’t have a space to do it without hitting the goal of an office. They do some skits via Easy Update, some of which are really great (see the Animal Crossing one), but most of that is just off the cuff and when they feel like it. It must be difficult when they only all get together once a week.
They’ve had a bit of a funding dip in the last few weeks too, which is a shame because they’ve made a lot of QOL improvements in the past month. Thumbnails have been spruced up, streams have a more uniform and professional look and they’re talking about smartening up the E3 coverage too. These little things don’t really get the appreciation but it makes them look like a classier outfit than they have the means to be.
I think there was a recent Patreon post about doing more short form content like ManUps, though I was never really into it, as people have been requesting it a lot. Box Peak is the start of that and Dons new thing helps too. I wouldn’t expect too much though, hopefully they’re support builds up to E3 as they’ve been milling about 40k for a long time now. It’d be really good to see Brandon do something creative himself, he’s really talented and talks about scripts and acting and creating games etc but we never really get to see any of it. He’s the main editor aside from Ian so I guess it’s difficult time wise but I think he should just lay his chips down and write a Red Dead musical or something.
Box Peak was great.
