I really don't have the patience to replay long sections of the game, multiple times.

Are you playing DSIII or the original Dark Souls?
Either way finding a bonfire for the first time
should be a bit of an "Oh thank God" moment. From each one you should consider it your base as you recon and probe the surrounding areas till you find out the way to go. Yes you'll die, and you will have to replay the same stretches more than once while you learn the game. However as you progress and grow stronger, areas that you once struggled with become easier. You'll open up shortcuts. Your weapons become better and you learn the best way to deal with the enemies in your path. Whenever you die, try and analyse what happened. Did you forget to check behind you and get jumped, did you walk off a ledge while in combat, were you trying to get too many hits in before retreating or blocking?
If there's one thing I can say about Dark Souls is that every death can teach you something. Except for Bed of Chaos. That can just strawberry float off.
It's not for everyone and it can take a while for it to click with some (Took me three attempts over 6 months to get into it), but if you stick with it you might just find it to be one of the most rewarding and satisfying gaming experiences you ever have. If not, then at least you gave it a go.
