Smash Bros Brawl "downright awful"?

Ah, okay, it would appear that the term i used lacked accuracy and for that i apologise, here therefore, is a much more realistic description...

*ahem*

It was shite.

Vermilion confusing "personal taste" with "objective quality" methinks.

Wii sports plays great though! Yes motion plus is a lot better and delivers on actual (near enough) 1-to-1, but wii sports is designed with the wiimote limitations. Bowling is still lots of fun.

Maybe Bowling was. Tennis was the main one I played, and once I realised it was a lot more about the timing of the stroke than anything else, and that mad flailing would do the job... well, it lost a bit of its magic. Resort recaptured that magic for me.

...Tennis and Baseball actually, and Baseball mostly to see what daft teams of Miis would line up. Yeti and the Queen vs. Hitler and Tintin, is it? Standard. (The baseball itself... Well, I never got the 'game' part of it.)

The series has always been mostly awful, but while the second game did have some merit, the third was just diabolical thanks largely to the wii controllers.

Actually I kind of agree.

Apart from the bit where you say the third game was bad largely due to the wii controllers because you can use Gamecube controllers and I imagine the classic controller wasn't too bad. I'd also say Wii remote + nunchuck was okay as well, at least for casual play.

Using the Wii Remote Plus controller to play Wii Sports Resort's bowling and - especially - table tennis easily stands as one of my most enjoyable gaming moments. The feel of movement and control is just terrific. In table tennis you can even spin and slice the ball... it's so good.

I wish there was a new Wii Sports for the Switch... but I'd guess that the joy-con are a bit small and not really shaped to hold in the same way that the remotes were.

Could you imagine if Nintendo secretly added Wiimote compatibility with this week's software update and bundled the game with a USB sensor bar?!

Wii Sports did revolutionise the industry though. I get what you're saying about Motion+ (and TP motion controls were tacked on for sure) but a big part of Wii Sports appeal (and its magic to be fair) was its simplicity.

I hope they bring it back. I still wheel the Wii out from time to time and Wii Sports (and Resort) are as fun as the day I first played them.

I do agree with you re. the revolutionary aspect. From a popularity perspective it definitely realised its potential. From a me playing games perspective, I found that magic evaporated when thought about too hard, and especially when compared to Motion+.

I hate the whole Wii malarky, Playing Mario Galaxy on Switch with barely any of that gubbins is a god send.

Joy-cons are fine replacements for wiimotes, the only downside being the lack of a speaker (as demonstrated by the No More Heroes switch port)

When it's not drifting it's fine!

The lack of d-pad is the larger crime ;)

I think it should have come with a dpad as standard not buttons in a rough dpad shape.

I'm gonna say the N64's despite it only having like three (or four?) games at launch.

I'm going to say it because it's the only time I've ever felt like a launch was exciting due to how groundbreaking it was. It was such a leap over the previous generation, and SM64 is a landmark title which influenced so many games after it.

The only one I can think that compares to it is the Wii for its unique input device.

Purely on software alone is difficult to decide.

I was alive for the launches of the gba onwards
of these consoles I was paying attention from the launch of the 3ds in 2011
all those launches sucked so I'm gonna pick the switch because it had zelda and having a switch made me a hot ticket item amongst my friend group and like one girl I liked at the time
