It was something that people in general have been clamouring for, so I thought it would be interesting to seeif what exactly people wanted Retro to do with it. They are a Western developer like you said, so would they want it to stick to its arcades schmup roots (traditionally a Japanese genre) or go down a more third-person adventure root like Rare.

I must admit, and without sounding too harsh, that I was surprised you idea ranked as high as it did (you were joint third with me, I think). It was a comfortable piece and wouldn't have seen you eliminated but, like you gave said yourself, there were much more creative ideas out there.

Saying that, I didn't like your western-focused idea for Starfox... but I gave you a western developer to work with. Oops.

Yeah, I've always been in the 'Treasure should make a Starfox game' camp.

Talking about the giraffe sword Pokemon on the podcast  still think it's harsh that it went out, but damn it was funny.

Dan has to be favourite.

To be honest (and I will keep whinging to a minimum), I dont think the extra life should have been valid for the final.Everyone should be there on an equal footing, regardless of what earlier tasks they won, as we have all got here by passing tasks and on an equal merit. I mean, I have won a task too, and Dala may have too, but we don't have that security.

Plus, it would be a bit annoying if, say, Dan and one other are left at the end of the final, and he is "knocked out" only to come back and win. Could be a bit galling not to be crowned champion then when you could have been.

I was sure DML said that it wasn't valid in the final. Ah well. Let's get Dan rid of it as soon as possible, eh, guys? (I joke, but he is doubly harder to knock out now).

I predict a Dan/Dala head to head for the title, with Dan's extra life resulting in an epic clash in which he narrowly survive.

Though I can also see Dala being utterly desperate to reclaim his title and be the "last ever" Guru.

Without being harsh to Diabolito, I think myself and him will be the two in 3rd and 4th.

I see myself being brought back into the final at a late stage. There's a third time for everything.

The player who wins this task will have an extra life for their duration of their stay in the contest, and if they are to be eliminated at any stage of the contest, instead of being eliminated they will lose their EXTRA LIFE INSTEAD. From this point onwards, they will be just as vunerable as anyone else in the contest.

In any round bar the Grand Final, the loss of the Extra Life keeping the player in the game will deflect the elimination spot to the next lowest scoring available person to be knocked out. So it is a powerful thing to own!

Good luck all of you in your pursuit of it.

Just noticed this.

Lizzy, you mention that the extra life "in any round bar the grand final" results in elimination going to the next player.

Does this mean it wasn't meant to be valid in the Grand Final? Or that no-one will be eliminated due to Dan's extra life? Just he loses it?

The life does count in the final, but if he loses it - the elimination is not deflected onto the player who finishes second from bottom in a round - that would be super unfair. So he will simply lose the life, we carry onto the next round with Dan now just as vunerable as anyone else in the game. As it is, he requires two knockout blows in the four rounds I have prepared.

EDIT - And I'm gonna say guys, I'm super excited for tonight.

It means that in the Grand Final, if Dan is due to be eliminated, his extra life will not result in the elimination of whomever would have been next in line, as it has done in other tasks. He just loses his extra life and the game continues with the same number of people still in.

This confused me on the podcast. :fp:

Okie doke.

I still disagree that it should count in the final, but at least no-one will be eliminated outright because of it.

It just creates less fuss if he doesn't have it, as I mentioned before. It could still cost someone a title. And would also reflect unfairly upon Dan, who hasn't needed to use the life thus far and has reached the final on merit.

Well, he has lost a life. He dtwo extra lives, and had to use one when the Green Squadron got tanked in the playoff. The only reason he currently has an extra life is because of the fact we were facing a task with no eliminations, so a prize had to be offered for doing well in the task.

That said, if anyone deserves an extra life, it is Dan. His writing and creative stuff has been amazing and shown tonnes of effort.

I am excited, and nervous, for tonight.

I wasn't really nervous in GGGC VI, as I was pleased just to get to the final, and my sole aim was just not to be the first one out.

To be honest, I don't expect to win it this time either, but I would be lying if I said I didn't really want to win - largely as this is the last contest and there won't be another chance. Would be nice to reclaim my title.

I am just glad I made the final still, mind. I wanted to prove that me winning in 2008 wasn't a flash in the pan and a fluke.

I maintain I was unlucky to lose my title with my Starfox Adventures review in, I think, the semi-final of GGGC VII (it was bloody excellent, you gooseberry fools).

Then in the other GGGCs I either went too left-field with my creative entries - I admit, the poverty-stricken criminal underworld of Goomba Ghetto, where Mushroom Kingdom residents were off their face on the drug "bow-wow" was perhaps a bit much - or didn't have much time to dedicate to the tasks. Like the flash games last time, which cost me. I only narrowly got eliminated, and I think my first task was a writing one which I performed averagely in, and a better showing would have put me through instead of Zenigame.

I have been lucky in that there hasn't been a flash game this time - I don't have time to play them constantly and achieve the zen-like skills some here possess - but I have deliberately paired back by creative writing into something less humourous, and made a concerted effort to pour a bit of time into tasks.

I was lucky the I had a few long bus journeys to mull over stuff, but also as this was the last competition, I really wanted to give it my all, and at least make another final.

As I said, I feel sometimes, like with GGGC VII, I have been knocked out unfairly when I should have progressed with the quality of my piece. With GGGC VIII my Mario-Kart track was a mistep - a devotion to entries that are "something different" when a more conservative effort (I had decent ideas) would have got me through. And GGGC IX, lack of time in the flash game round and, again, a humourous piece, dropped my averages score in a tough team. I think I was on the podium in the Pointless task, and I felt miffed that I didn't "hit the ground running".

I felt a bit like I hadn't "hit the ground running" since my elimination in GGGC VII (I was doing well until I was knocked out due to that Starfox review), so I had a point to prove.

So it is odd you say I "have form" this time. Without sounding arrogant, I feel it too - I feel like this is how I should have performed in other contests, and the form which saw me win it before. It is all from a deliberate effort on my part though. I made an effort, though, to build this form, and put the time into each tasks (often staying up very late). It is no coincidence I did this in 2008 too, when I had finished Uni exams and had time to kill).

It is also frustrating for me, as I wish I had done this in GGGC VIII and IX. Maybe I would have made more than two finals.

Ah well.

I must say though, even though I haveto not always been pleased with my own performance, I have loved every minute of all the contests I have been in. And, like I said, I am pleaded now just to have got to another final and proved to myself I can do it again. And, obviously, chuffed I have got to the last ever one.

So maybe my own situation is very similar to GGGC VI. After all, I was just pleased to be there then, and just not wanting to be the first out....

And obviously a huge thank you to DML.

Yes, I argue with him about some of the finer points of the rules, and I didn't agree with his actions in AYAW, but I was always going to apply for this.

When I heard it was the last one, it fired me up even more and think: "right, I am not going to mess around anymore".

If anything though, the melting pot task was quite a good one for me, as everyone went left-field for that.

Still, one day you will all look back at my travel guide piece for Dinosaur Planet and think: "Why didn't we love this guy enough?!" But by then I will be dead, having slashed my wrists with the paper upon which Goomba Ghetto was designed.

There's a multiple-choice quiz round, a 'fastest finger first' style quiz round, and a karaoke round, so you'll need a computer mic. The tiebreaker's a secret but it involves Don Mattrick in some way.
