"Staycation" is such a nonsense term.

We are having lots of weekend camping trips to places like the New Forest (Lyndhurst). Going camping in Dorset this weekend with my kids.

We are however planning a 2500 mile European road trip at the end of August. strawberry float your staycation shite

It's not really affected me as my summer holiday is usually two weeks camping in the UK anyway. I think we might do Dumfries and Galloway this year as it seems a bit of a hidden gem compared to the really popular places up the west coast, Skye, etc.

Madness. I think what you meant to say was "there is strawberry float loads to do in Inverness, but strawberry float all without a car" ;)

Just off the top of my head you have:

Loch Ness
Culloden Battlefield
Four or five well-known castles
Fort Augustus Abbey
Fort George
The Cairngorms
Highland Wildlife Park
Glen Affric
Dolphin watching at Cromarty
Loads of distilleries.

Granted if you aren't into the outdoors (or drinking) there isn't much in the city itself. Although saying that within 5 minutes walk of the city centre are some of the most picturesque walks you will find in any city in the UK. You could easily find enough to do in Inverness for a long weekend without a car, or rent a car if you want to make it a week.

Plus with the current pandemic you won't have the usual swarms of tourists that get in the way during summer. Although I bet there will be a strawberry float tonne of caravans on the A9.

</slightly biased but not really because The Highlands are amazing>

Thanks for the suggestions all! Dawlish is a particularly intruiging one.

Scotland as well is a good shout, though my partner has done Edinburgh to death as part of her job (managing foreign students coming over here to study) so we'd have to go somewhere else within Scotland I reckon.

Four hours on a train isn’t it? And a nice journey as well, goes right next to the sea as you get to the border and Berwick.

Other thing about Edinburgh is that you have easy access to the rest of Central Scotland(Glasgow, Stirling) and the East(Fife, Queensferry, other nice places) through the train network, which is close to running as normal again.

I’m loathe to do it because it’s in my nature to hate the London of the North, but I would strongly recommend Edinburgh for a trip away at the moment.

I'd love to explore more of Scotland but, despite having a licence, I don't like driving and haven't driven at all in six years. The transport options unfortunately seem very limited!

I'd especially love to see the Hebrides. I'd love to visit Shetland and Orkney one day too.

Aberdeen sounds like the place to be at the moment.

The Northumberland coast between Newcastle and Berwick upon Tweed has alright transport links (especially buses) and is very beautiful, with castles, sandy beaches, hills, cute little towns and villages.

If you count Tynemouth then I've at least been there (just out on the metro from Newcastle, super easy to get to). Had some great fish and chips by the castle as I remember!

Lindisfarne is another place I intend to see at some point.

I've been with family to Whitby (stayed in Sandsend) which is a little further south but also very nice.

Especially the way it’s used now.

A staycation is meant to mean a holiday where you stay in your own home and do holiday-type day trips etc. The way it’s used to mean any holiday in the UK is dreadful. There’s already a word for that: holiday. The idea that it’s not a holiday if you don’t leave the country is strawberry floated up and offensive.

Hello!

So whose holiday plans have been scuppered? I'm down a honeymoon and a trip to the states at the moment and am going stir crazy.

Me and my partner really need a break so gonna do the government's bidding and stay within the UK.

Can you help recommend any places that:

- Are accessible by train, easily from London
- Has nice nature/walking potential
- Doable without a car - e.g. Town/Food shops walkable nearby

Also let me know your staycation plans plz

Brockenhurst in the New Forest. Less than two hours on the train from London, Lots of walks through forests. Wild horses, seaside within distance, lots of lovely pubs.

Oh I know, but you resonated with me around the implications that it's not a real holiday unless you go abroad (which I don't agree with - it's still a holiday even if its a neo-staycation, but the language you use matters and all that)

I've only been out of the UK twice for holidays, and both of those were over ten years ago. Completely agree that not leaving the country meaning it's not a proper holiday is complete crap. There's plenty of great places to explore around the UK. I want to get out exploring some more, even if it's only to the next county over. Plenty of things to be enjoying. And speaking of such... that's where the Cotswolds are. Never been exploring around there, but sure would like to.

Was it not here where we discussed the people who go holidaying to places like Italy just to spend all day sat outside the pool easily getting such an experience in the UK if they wanted to, but because it was the UK it didn't feel like a holiday?
